Crisps & Glosticks -an all age service on being Salt & Light

Salt & Light

4th before Lent Year A

 Intro & Welcome

Hymn :  This little light of mine

Reading Matthew  5 13-16 (NLT)

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Pt 1

Salt: what do we use it for?

Food: flavour, cleaning mouthwash, (packet of salt, grinder)

Preservation,  safety –iced paths & roads

Jesus said we are to be like salt..

We are to make a difference to the world we live in, to make it “taste better” to be a cleaner fresher safer place –because of the way we live,

By following Jesus’’ example of love forgiveness and inclusion,

by letting the Holy Spirit change us, so we really live those things from the inside out

But we need to mix it up & get mixed inCS0117

Salt & shake crisps..  hand round an open unsalted packet – taste them.. bit dull….

the salt’s in the packet but it’s inside its little blue bag..  if it stays in the bag it doesn’t make any difference to the crisps – it’s no good on its own, a mouthful of salt tastes horrid.

we need to rip open the blue bag, pour it out and give it a good old shake –

open bag, and salt and shake on the crisps.. hand that round

We need to be salt – but we’re no good tied up in our own little blue bag…saltnshake our blue bag can be church or our home or our busy-ness.  But if it seals off the salt from the world around us, if we don’t get out and shake things up, it’s pointless.

Hand out rest of the packets of crisps while we sing

Hymn : Oh Lord all the world belongs to you ( turning the world upside down)

pt 2

Light:

What do we need light for?

Seeing, safety, celebration, comfort bike lights, torch, candles,  birthday candles  : call out ideas -talk about safety, visibility, warmth comfort, encouragement..get birthday people out to hold candles

Jesus asks us to be light in his world –glowsticks-different-colors

Again by living the message of Jesus, by letting his light grown in us until it shines out –use glostick

We need to bend and crack a bit when we encounter Jesus – bend glostick, we need to be shaken up,  shake & activate  and when we are then we start to glow with his light, as we are changed.

But it’s very easy to hide isn’t it glo stick in pocket

Where it’s no point at all..  Jesus says..don’t hide.. no one puts a light under a basket – we don’t black out our lightbulbs or turn on torches in our pockets… shine out so that everyone can see.. so that we make a difference in our world.

Confession

Give out  small glosticks:  Activate them. Bend and crack and give them a good shake  Hold them in your hand, with your crisps  We pray together asking God to forgive us:

Loving God forgive us for the times when we are like salt in the blue bags – sealed away from the world, not making a difference

Help us to shake things up , to help your world to be a tastier safer  fresher place

Jesus light of the world,  forgive us for the times we have hidden your light in us

Help us to shine for you,  to let the light of you shone out of our lives, to help make our world  a brighter place

We thank you that you  forgive us when we ask, and that you help us to move on  to love for you  Amen

As part of  being Salt & Light we pray now for our world

Intercessions

Let us now pray to the Father of light

that we may truly become the salt and the light of the world.

To each section our response is:
Lord, let your light shine in us.

That there may be more love on earth, Lord,

we ask you to help people to be more understanding

and friendlier to one another

and to share more readily with those in need, so we pray:

Lord, let your light shine in us.

So that there may be greater justice on earth,

help governments and public officials

to make room in their priorities and budgets

for the socially deprived and those out of jobs, so we pray:

Lord, let your light shine in us.

That there may be more peace on earth,

Help  all nations to  end  words of hatred

and threats of revenge, so we pray:
Lord, let your light shine in us.

So that there may be greater faith on earth,

Help  all your sons and daughters

to live as children of light before you

may  your Holy Spirit change us from within so that as, we pray:

Lord, let your light shine in us.

Lord God, we pray that your light may shine on all the earth.

However limited we are, let our words and actions

reflect the light of your love,

in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

Blessing

May God who made us and keeps us going, shake us up and pour us out to be like salt in his world.

May God who forgives us and gives us his power within us, make us shine, without fear, to His glory,

 And the blessing…+

Dear Fibre Fairy, I love your crisps and glowsticks sermon, and I would really like to use it in my church as a talk at our all age worship next week. Would that be OK? Thanks,
